Thema:

“Providing access to a sign language corpus through a web-based query tool”

Abstract:

The DGS Corpus contains 560 hours of German Sign Language (DGS) video dialogues, recorded between 2010 and 2012 and extensively annotated since then. A subset of the data, the Public DGS Corpus, consists of 50 hours of annotated and translated dialogues and is available online through three interfaces, the first two available since 2018 and the third since 2022. The first is designed for the deaf community with videos and optional subtitles. The second is aimed at the research community with videos, translations and annotations available for viewing or download plus a type index of sign glosses. The third allows the corpus to be viewed and searched in a web browser using the ANNIS query and visualisation software.

In this talk, after introducing the corpus and its annotations, I will summarise some previous research carried out using it. I will then describe the process of converting the Public DGS Corpus data for use in ANNIS and the challenges I encountered. I will conclude with examples of how data and metadata searches can be combined in our ANNIS instance for future research purposes.
